Here are some myths about emergency towing services that you should try not to fall for.
They're an unnecessary expense if you know someone who owns a tow chain
If your vehicle breaks down and you know someone who lives nearby who owns a tow chain, then you might conclude that using a towing service could be a waste of money, as you could just ask this person to tow your vehicle. However, this decision could be a major false economy. The reason for this is that towing a vehicle requires skill and great care. If this friend or relative has only used their tow chain on a few occasions, there is a good chance that they don't have the skill level needed to transport your vehicle without damaging it.
For example, if a person who is towing your vehicle takes a corner too quickly, your vehicle could go sliding towards a nearby road user or a street lamp. In these circumstances, you would not only incur the repair fees to fix the issue that led to your vehicle breaking down in the first place, but you might also be stuck with a second repair bill related to the damage your vehicle sustained during this person's attempt to tow it.
In contrast, towing companies have commercial-grade towing equipment, and their employees, most of whom have towed vehicles dozens of times, will have the knowledge they need to protect their clients' vehicles when they're using this equipment to tow them. As such, the chances of your vehicle being damaged when a professional tow truck driver is towing it are incredibly low. Furthermore, in the unlikely event of something happening to your vehicle whilst it was being towed (for example, if another car collided with the tow truck), the towing company's insurance would likely cover any repair costs related to the incident.
It takes hours for towing companies to send a truck to collect a stranded customer
There's a common myth that towing companies take hours to pick up stranded customers whose vehicles have broken down. This can deter drivers who end up in this situation from using a towing service and can lead to them making the aforementioned error of asking a friend to tow their vehicle instead.
In reality, whilst there might be some rare occasions when towing companies take a bit longer to reach a stranded client (for example, if there is a major storm or flood occurring in the area or if they happen to be experiencing an exceptionally high number of call-outs on a particular day), most of the time, the tow truck drivers will arrive very shortly after the client contacts the towing company.
